Transportation Projects

With well over 30 years in-depth experience, and working with blue-chip engineering consultants, I continue to contribute detailed technical to highway and other transportation projects throughout the UK mainland:

  • new-build ... upgrade ... major maintenance
  • local improvements ... major new arterial road
  • local safety schemes ... development-led infrastructure
  • major interchanges ... mini roundabouts
  • on-street tram projects (integrated street layout)
  • city-centre streets ... rural road
  • preliminary design ... detailed design
  • permanent works ... temporary works
  • feasibility work, problem-solving, sensitivity analyses

More significant than the scale and nature of your project is the scope of your ambition - or your clients’. Achieving the highest standards in quality and value demand a corresponding order of expertise.

Natural aptitude. Acquired skill. Resourcefulness. Tenacity. Experience. These are the ‘added value’ I contribute to your projects - and our long-term relationship.

Profile

I graduated from Portsmouth in 1978 with a BSc in Civil Engineering (Commendation), and qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer in 1984.

For fifteen years I worked for a number of highway authorities around the UK, designing or supervising the construction of projects varying from industrial estates to by-passes, from car-parking for a mediaeval town centre to the improvement of forest roads, and a wide variety of other projects in-between and beyond.

In 1993, ready for a fresh challenge, I took up a position as specialist highway design engineer with a German civil engineering consultant based in Würzburg, Bavaria, moving there with the family. During two years of very intensive work on major German re-unification projects, I became very thoroughly acquainted with  German highway design standards and engineering practice. I also acquired fluency in the language (conversational and technical) and familiarity with business practices. From 1995 I worked freelance for clients throughout Germany, in Belgium and, after finally returning to the UK in 1998, here too.

By 1999 I was working first as as engineer for an international waste management business, covering the English West Midlands and North Wales, planning, designing and supervising the construction of landfill works, recycling centres, composting facilities, quarries. From 2001 I worked for a major UK consultant as highway design engineer, soon finding myself again in the position of highway geometry and layout specialist. I developed expertise in design of junctions that others had more or less given up on - especially roundabouts and non-standard interchanges. Seeking more variety and challenge, I volunteered for secondment to a related business in Scotland, assisting with operational management of all trunk roads west and north of The Great Glen.

20090630-01variantOn relocating to the Isle of South Uist in late 2002 I returned to self-employment. A programme of investment in resources and skills has allowed me to provide a wider range of service very effectively (but also cost-effectively) directly from my home office, or when necessary at my client’s project design office. To 2009 my work included: Detailed layout design for on-street tram projects in Merseyside, Dublin and Edinburgh; External civil engineering works for large commercial and industrial sites; Preliminary or detailed design for upgrades to long lengths of the A1 in northern England; Major highway schemes in Ireland; waste disposal and recycling facilities; access roads for forestry and wind farms; topographical surveys in the Outer Hebrides.

Since 2009 I have been employed by a leading UK consultant to assist with numerous and varied projects for mainland local authorities; but at the same time, projects here in the islands - from design for a £2m wind turbine project in Barra to project management for bespoke houses in the nearby island of Harris - have increased to such an extent that they now make up the majority of my overall workload.

Whilst having over many years provided the services of a specialist, my interest in civil engineering and construction remains wide-ranging. That we are given the opportunity - and the responsibility - to use our skills in the betterment of our world is to me a ‘given’ - a cornerstone of my professional practice. Understanding the wider context of the projects on which I am engaged - no matter how small my contribution to a project - provides the vision required to deliver solutions that are genuinely optimal, a creative balance between a multitude of - and often conflicting - concerns.
